CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Salsa 1 - Beginner (4 or 9 weeks):
Learn the HOTTEST dance craze - SALSA DANCING!  You'll learn the basic steps and hip movements that make this dance so exciting to do.  This is a beginners' class - no experience or partner necessary, we rotate.  Sometimes a little Merengue and Cha Cha Cha will be covered.  This is a good dance workout to great Latin music.  Get ready to move and groove to those Latin sounds!  An optional field trip to a real Salsa club is planned near the conclusion of class.

Salsa 2 - Advanced Beginner (9 weeks):
Learn more HOT salsa steps - L.A. Style!  Learn some of the most popular salsa steps to go out club dancing here in L.A.  Freestyle and partner steps will be covered and as always, you'll get a great workout while dancing to popular Latin music.  No partner necessary, we rotate.  Bring water and a towel.  An optional field trip to a real Salsa club is planned near the conclusion of class.  Prerequisite:  Salsa 1

Salsa 3 - Beg/Intermediate (9 weeks):
Learn some fancy footwork "shines" and more popular L.A. Style steps.  More focus on timing and leading will be covered as well as short choreographed step sequences to practice.  Bring water and a towel, as you're guaranteed to work up a big sweat in class.  An optional field trip to a real Salsa club is planned near the conclusion of class.  Prerequisites:  Salsa 1 and 2.

Salsa 4 - Intermediate (9 weeks):

Learn some intricate "shine" sequences.  Add styling to your moves to make you look cool (guys) and sensual (ladies) on the dance floor.  This class includes a choreographed partner sequence of MANY steps.  This is an Intermediate class.  A Guest Instructor will be included most weeks to offer a variety of partner steps and styling.  Optional:  Dance Social and Dance Fieldtrip.  Prerequisites:  Instructor approval.

Salsa & Swing Sampler or Cha Cha Cha & Swing Sampler (5 weeks):
Learn 2 of the hottest dance sensations - Salsa & Swing (East Coast) or Cha Cha Cha & Swing (East Coast)!  The first 1/2 hour of class will cover one dance, the second 1/2 hour will cover the other dance.  This is a beginners' class that will introduce you to the basic timing and rhythm as well as the most popular steps for the two dances.  No partner necessary - come ready to dance!

Salsa - Casino Rueda (2 weeks on up to 7 weeks):
This is one of the MOST FUN styles of salsa dancing!  Couples dance salsa and pass their partners from one to another simultaneously in a circle or "wheel" formation ("Rueda" means "wheel" in Spanish).  There is a caller who calls or hand signals the move and sets the pace of the dance.  This is a very social style of salsa dancing and it's non-stop dancing!  Prerequisites:  Salsa 1 & 2.

Salsa - Ladies' Styling:
Learn how to add style and attitude to your dancing.  We'll work on hip movements, hand placements, footwork and bodywork that will make your dancing look smooth and sensual.  You must be an Advanced Beginnner for this class. Prerequisites: Salsa 1 & 2.

Salsa Line Dancing (6 weeks):
Learn some salsa "shines" (solo footwork) in this fast-paced, dance til you drop salsa class! Bodygroove instructor Hollie Lee will teach you some fancy footwork, spins and hand movements that will help you stylize your dancing and make you look cool (guys) and sensual (ladies) on the dance floor. Short solo dance combinations will be put together in each class and we’ll keep dancing them til we really sweat! Be sure to bring a towel and water. This class has no partner dancing. Prerequisites: Salsa 1 & 2.

Swing 1 (9 weeks):
Learn to dance East Coast Swing - it's so much fun!  You'll learn the basics in single, double and triple time and easy to learn partner steps.  This is a beginners' class - no experience or partner necessary.  The great upbeat music will make you really want to boogy and dance!  Come prepared to sweat, as we really move in this class.  Smooth-soled shoes recommended.

Spring Fling Performance Group (9 weeks + additional practices):

This group performs at the annual Spring Fling Show in June in front of hundreds of people.  It's a great chance to learn a short routine and then show it off to family and friends.  It's exciting and nerve-racking at the same time!  Prerequisites:  Salsa 1, 2 & 3 plus Instructor Approval.  See "Spring Fling" for more details.

STUFF FOR CLASS:

Shoes:
These are your most important tool for dancing. Make sure they are comfortable, that you feel stable walking in them and that they stay on your feet. If they are hard to walk in, they will be very difficult to dance in. If your shoes are too big or have an open-back, your foot may come out of the shoe while turning.

Ladies: Smooth-soled shoes with a comfortable heel; no open-back shoes (no slip-ons or mules) or shoes with sticky soles.
Men: Smooth-soled shoes with a slight heel; no sticky rubber soled shoes or tennies (you know, the ones that screech on the floor if you try to turn)

The best shoes for dancing are, of course – dance shoes. The soles of the shoes are thin and have suede on the bottom. The suede soles help you glide as well as grip the floor for dancing. Do not wear dance shoes outside, as that will ruin the soles. Also, clean the soles regularly to keep them in good shape. Visit the “Shop” page for dance shoes.
Clothing:
Wear clothes that are comfortable, allow you to move and that you don’t mind perspiring in. If it’s cold, wear layers so you can take a layer off after you warm up from dancing. Suggestion: try wearing light-weight or synthetic blends versus 100% heavy cotton. Cotton blend, like cotton w/ spandex will dry faster and not stay as “wet” from sweating. Although 100% heavy cotton may feel good, once it gets wet from sweating, it stays wet against your skin for a long time and can be uncomfortable. If you don’t like synthetic material, at least make sure it’s light weight cotton or, bring an extra top/shirt to change into after class.

Ladies: If you wear a strappy shouldered top, make sure the straps stay up on your shoulders when you move around. It’s difficult to do partner moves when you’re pulling up your straps. Try not to wear long flowing sleeves or big clunky jewelry that may get in the way while dancing.
Men: Short sleeved shirts are usually preferable, since some ladies are not comfortable touching bare shoulders or seeing underarms at close range. :o)

Water & Towel:
We really move in these classes! Bring a water bottle and towel to class, especially if you know you sweat a lot!

Class Etiquette:
Here are some tips which will help make everyone’s experience in class as enjoyable as possible:

1.
Be respectful, courteous and considerate to others in class – everyone is in class to learn and have fun. Class is not a nightclub environment, so please refrain from getting too personal with a classmate. Keep it respectful.
2.
Please be on time – we start class with the ever important warm-up, which reviews steps from the previous weeks. This helps you get the most out of class. If you are late, please take a space in the back row so as not to disturb others. If you need to leave early, inform the instructor before class.
3.
Be sure to check your name off on the class roster on the clipboard in the back. It eliminates taking roll – which means more class time for everyone.
4.
Do not talk while the instructor is talking - it disrupts and slows down the class, since you and others may not hear the instructions. Also, rotate partners promptly to keep the class moving along.
5.
Turn off Cell Phones – please turn off your ringers and pagers during class and if you must take a call, please excuse yourself from class so as not to disturb others.
6.
7.
If you have a cold, please do not come to class
NO VIDEO TAPING of class.
8.
Grooming – we are in close contact while partner dancing, so, in consideration to your fellow classmates, please practice good hygiene and refrain from heavy use of colognes or perfumes. Also, fresh breath is always appreciated, so bring gum or mints to class (no alcohol or onion breath please!).
9.
Do not correct others in class. Sometimes your help may not be appreciated by others or you may be explaining the movement incorrectly. Leave the instructions and the directions to the instructor(s).
